Toll Service/Austria

The toll system in Austria

In Austria, all vehicles of an admissible total weight of over 3.5 tons on motorways and highways are subject to toll.

Toll registration:

The toll is registered, controlled and invoiced via an obligatory, so-called GO-Box. This box is an electronic transmitter/receiver that communicates with some 800 planned toll bridges along the relevant routes, advising the control body whether the toll is being paid correctly, i.e. whether the GO-Box has been properly activated.

The GO-Box is about the size of a cigarette packet and can be easily attached by the driver using the adhesive strip delivered with the unit.

You can order the GO-Box for your verhicles via the order form you can find here!

Just fill in your company's and vehicles' data comfortably on the screen, print out the form and then send it, stamped and signed, back to us via our order-hotline +49 (0) 60 27 509 210. Please fax the French order forms to our department in France via +33 (0) 3 90 40 25 99.

The Go-Boxes will be sent to you directly by the Austrian toll operator ASFINAG.

If you already dispose of a Go-Box and wish to benefit of UTA's Invoicing Service, please complete this form and fax it to the free of charge hotline 00 800 / 88 26 83 62.

Toll payment:

Payment can be made using a pre- or post pay procedure.
Pre-pay means that you can ‘load’ your GO-Box with a specified amount at about 200 terminals, to be ‘spent’ as required (unused prepaid toll amounts will be reimbursed). Post-pay means that you can use a charge partner, such as UTA, to pay your toll charges simply in arrears in an uncomplicated process. The toll charges incurred will then be booked in the familiar way as a specially marked item on your 14-day statement.

In both cases, the GO-Box itself is free of charge as it will stay property of ASFINAG, the Austrian toll operator. However, EUROPPASS will charge an administrative fee of € 5 per GO-Box for initialisation.

Toll Tariffs:

There is a standard tariff per kilometre for all stretches, depending on the relevant vehicle category (details are available here) - however, special higher tariffs are applicable for Brenner Pass and certain tunnels.

According to the latest information the tariffs will be as follows:

Standard tariff:

Vehicles in category 2: 0.158 €/km (plus VAT)
Vehicles in category 3: 0.2212 €/km (plus VAT)
Vehicles in category 4: 0.3318 €/km (plus VAT)
