UTA team sets up mobile handover stations for toll units at ten border crossing points

  • Satellite-based toll system in Belgium starts on 1 April 2016
  • UTA Service provides quick solutions for drivers and haulage companies

Kleinostheim – 30 March 2016. One week before the new toll system is introduced in Belgium, massive delivery difficulties have beset Belgian toll operators in the supplying of Satellic OBUs: “Only a small proportion of OBUs has arrived for large customers, some of whom have ordered and registered their vehicle data for several hundred units”, as UTA CEO Volker Huber describes the situation. Consequently, UTA has formed a taskforce and has mobilised all available resources from sales and service. Thousands of units were personalised in the UTA headquarters in Kleinostheim over the Easter holidays and sent out directly and immediately to as many customers as possible. UTA has also set up mobile handover stations at ten border crossing points with Belgium.

“Out-dated versions of software as well as huge logistic problems with the suppliers in delivering the toll units to our customers have caused many difficulties. We are making immense efforts to compensate these customers by providing them with a quick and practical solution”, say Volker Huber in reply to the question of responsibility for the delay. As many customers as possible will be contacted directly from the UTA headquarters in order to immediately register the units that are still required and to deliver them by the 1 April 2016. “We ourselves are setting up mobile OBU service stations at ten heavily-used border crossings. At these stations, our own employees will work together with toll operators to support our customers in a two-shift operation between the hours of 6am and 10pm”, says Volker Huber.

The UTA mobile service stations will be set up at the following border crossings:

  • Joost Truckstop Meer, Europastraat 10, 2321 Meer – Belgium
  • Parking area Maasmechelen / Boorsem, A2/E314 Stein => Maasmechelen, 3631 Maasmechelen – Belgium
  • TOTAL – Lichtenbusch, Lichtenbusch Nord E40/A3 Aachen => Liège, 4731 Lichtenbusch – Belgium
  • Parking area Sterpenich Nord, Sterpenich Nord A4/E25 Capellen => Arlon, 6700 Arlon - Belgium
  • Parking area - Rekkem Süd, Rekkem Zuid A14/E17 Roncq => Kortrijk, 8930 Rekkem – Belgium
  • Border crossing Steinebrück, broder crossing Steinebrück East, A60/E42 Prüm => St. Vith
  • Parking area Moelingen West, A25/E25 Maastricht => Liege Schansweg 3400, 3790 Moelingen – Belgium
  • Mol – Mol, Mol Noord A21/E34 Eindhoven => Antwerpen, 2400 Mol - Belgium
  • SOFICO – Hensies, Hensies Sud A7/E19 Valenciennes => Mons, 7350 Hensies – Belgium
  • Aire de repos (rest area) – Ghyvelde, DIR Nord Aire de repos A16, Ghyvelde - France

Parallel to the service offer from UTA, the toll service provider Satellic has also announced that around 40 to 50 mobile teams will be stationed to hand out OBUs at the borders in addition to the more than 100 service points. However, capacity of the machines at the service points is limited to 25 units and entering data takes around 10 minutes. “This could lead to queues, which could in turn cost haulage firms money”, says UTA boss Huber. UTA services at headquarters and the colleagues at the ten mobile UTA stations will be working from 31 March to 8 April to minimise any loss of time by UTA customers.

In addition, all current information will be posted on the UTA accounts on the XING, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter social networks.

The electronic Eurovignette will be replaced in Belgium on 1 April 2016 by the Viapass satellite-based toll system. At the same time, tolls will become obligatory for all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (down from the previous threshold of 12 tonnes).
